Samba Beats (May 14)

Gabriel Lopes will also do another Europe tour in 2026 and of course a visit to Nijmegen cannot be missed. On 14 May (Ascension Day) he will organize a great workshop day, this year in the style Roda de Samba (also called pagoda).

Workshop

We will learn 2 songs in this workshop. We do this in the way they do in the cafes and beach bars in Rio, so with pandeiro, tantan, repique de mão, naturevelsurdo, reco-reco and cuíca. So if you want to improve your technique on (one of) these instruments: Make sure you're there! Please note, no instruments are rented/borrowed, you have to bring your own. After purchasing your ticket, you will receive an e-mail with your admission ticket and a link to a form on which you can indicate which instrument(s) you will take with you and on which you can indicate any dietary requirements. Registration for this workshop day therefore consists of two steps: Buy a ticket and fill out the form.

Tickets

A ticket for this class day costs €70 and that includes coffee, tea and lunch. There are only a limited number of tickets, so don't wait too long. If you are fast, you can use the early-bird tickets, which are €5 cheaper. The ticket shop can be found here, at the bottom of this page. When purchasing your ticket, you can also order Gabriel's amazing book: Fundamentals of a samba school bateria. If you play rio-samba in your percussion group, this is definitely a must-have. If you order it now, Gabriel will take it for you to the workshop day (and then he can sign it right away, if you like). You can also buy a dinner with your ticket (€8) if you like to continue eating with us after the workshop.
Tickets will not be refunded. If you want to sell your ticket later, use our reselling partner TicketSwap.

About Gabriel Lopes

I have been a professional musician since the early 2000s. From the beginning I actively participated in the carnival of Rio. In that period I joined Monobloco, where I have been working as a musician and teacher ever since. With Monobloco I recorded two albums and two DVDs. As a teacher, I have been teaching Monobloco workshops for over 10 years, where I prepare students for the carnival parades in Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte and São Paulo. I also teach music schools and tour Europe, the United Kingdom and the United States to teach percussion at the baterias of samba schools. With my online courses I teach people from all over Brazil and Japan. I am the drum master of Volta Alice, a carnival group that has been paraded through the streets of the Laranjeiras district since 2005. The group attracts an average of 10,000 partygoers and the bateria consists of about 120 drummers. I am a researcher of the baterias of samba schools and to share my research I have written three books: Fundamentals of s Samba School Bateria, As Bossas do Mestre Maurão and Mestre Dudu: As Paradinhas da Não Existe Mais Quente.
